Recreation
Much of an adolescent's self-image is intertwined with his or her perception of the physical self. To gain self-confidence through physical activity and recreation enhances the overall well-being of the Island View resident. Mixing leisure and recreational activities with clinical and scholastic elements of treatment is an essential ingredient for positive development.
Island View's recreational activity program, is designed to promote trust of self and others, willingness to take personal risks, positive self-expression, healthy personal interests and self-confidence.
The health and fitness program is focuses on cardiovascular fitness. Activities like aerobics, circuit training, yoga, and specific sport skill training helps to improve strength, conditioning, and coordination skills. Island View provides intramural team sports between the teams with the intention of promoting cooperative interaction.
The outdoor program at Island View strives to inspire confidence and improve decision making abilities through new and challenging activities. Activities are weighted heavily with experiential techniques; learning through experiencing. Highly skilled instructors teach activities from rock climbing to fly fishing while providing a supportive environment for personal growth. Participation in community based activities such as movie going, attending sporting events, swimming, and other "normal" outlets reengage residents with healthy alternatives to their prior activities which may have been limited to antisocial pursuits, or overly isolating behaviors such as chat rooms, video games, etc.
